How to Bet on Golf

We gathered all the information necessary for Golf betting here.

For most golf tournaments, there are three different types of bets a gambler can make. Bettors can choose to bet on a particular golfer to win the event; wager that a specific golfer will place in one of the top three spots; or bet that one specific golfer will finish higher than another specific golfer.

When checking the odds of a golfer to win a tournament, bettors will normally view something like this:

Tiger Woods + 150

Phil Mickelson + 250

Steve Stricker + 300

Jeff Overton + 700

Ernie Els + 700

Field + 600

These odds are essentially listed as money line odds. This means that for every $10 you wager on Tiger Woods, you would win $15 if he wins the race. The ones that wagered on Overton would win $70.00 for every $10.00 they bet. Because your wager is returned to you when you make a winning bet, bettors putting $10 on Overton receive $80 back from the sportsbook instead of $70. This is because sportsbooks require payment for wagers up front.

Often, tournaments have a betting entry called "Field". This is comprised of the golfers not listed by the sportsbook. Although this method allows the bettor more than one golfer per wager, the field is generally made up of those golfers with the least opportunity to win. In the long run, this bet is best avoided.

Odds are, of course, lower when betting on a golfer to finish in the top three, as the book must pay off three winning bets.

By using the above example, odds for the golfers to end up in the top three would look like this:

Tiger Woods - 160

Phil Mickelson + 100

Steve Stricker + 110

Jeff Overton + 200

Ernie Els + 200

Field - 110

In this case, a bettor would have to risk $16 to win $10 that Tiger Woods will finish first, second, or third. At the same time, the bettor wagering on Jeff Overton stands to win $20 on his $10 wager, instead of $70.

Last, but not least, head-to-head match-ups are commonly placed last. Here the person placing the bet does not really care what place the golfer ends up in as long as the golfer he wagered on finishes higher than the other golfer.

A line that looks like this: Tiger Woods - 190, Steve Stricker + 150, is interpreted as follows: bettors wagering for Woods to finish ahead of Stricker are being asked to risk $19 to win $10. Bettors believing that Stricker will finish ahead are wagering $10 to win $15.

Golf wagering is similar in many ways to sports gambling, so it's not difficult to learn for anyone who has bet on sports before.
